Compare painters properly

Seven questions to ask before you compare the price.

A low number and a high number may describe two completely different jobs. These questions expose the difference quickly.

See how Dynamic Painting approaches a project →
1. What is being painted?Confirm every wall, ceiling, door, trim surface, exterior element and exclusion.
2. What preparation is included?Cleaning, sanding, scraping, filling, caulking, repairs and priming should not be left vague.
3. What coating system is specified?Ask for the product family, sheen and how colour or substrate changes affect the plan.
4. How will the property be protected?Floors, furniture, fixtures, landscaping, overspray risk and dust control all belong in the conversation.
5. Who is accountable on the job?Know who manages the scope, answers questions and completes the final walkthrough.
6. Are insurance and WCB current?Ask for proof rather than assuming every contractor carries the same protection.
7. What does the warranty actually cover?Read the written terms and exclusions before treating a warranty length as a complete comparison.
Before you book

Estimates, pricing, scheduling and payment

A good painting quote should help you understand the job before anyone opens a paint can. These answers focus on scope, timing, price comparisons and accountability.

Do you require an upfront deposit?

No. Dynamic Painting does not require an upfront deposit for our standard residential painting projects. Payment is due when the agreed painting work is complete. Any project-specific terms are stated in the written estimate.

Are your painting estimates free?

Yes for qualifying residential painting projects in our service area. The goal is to inspect the actual surfaces, discuss the scope and provide a written project price rather than rely on a vague phone estimate.

What should a professional painting estimate include?

A useful estimate should identify the surfaces being painted, preparation and repairs, coating system, protection, access requirements, exclusions, payment terms and applicable warranty conditions. That lets you compare the actual scope—not just the total price.

Why can two painting quotes for the same house be very different?

The quotes may not describe the same job. Preparation, repairs, product line, number of surfaces, colour changes, access, masking, protection and coating requirements can all change the scope. Ask each contractor to explain exactly what is included and excluded.

Can I estimate painting costs online before booking?

Yes, as a planning tool. Our calculator can provide preliminary guidance for common interior wall and ceiling work, but it cannot see repairs, access, substrate condition or finish expectations. A written site estimate is the reliable project price.

How far ahead should I book a painter in Calgary?

Lead times change with season, project size and weather. Exterior schedules are especially dependent on suitable application conditions. If you have a target date, arrange the estimate early rather than assuming a particular week will remain available.

Who oversees my project?

Dynamic Painting is founder-led. Marc Sharkey remains personally involved in project communication, scope and quality expectations, with the crew working from the agreed written plan.

What happens if the scope changes after work starts?

If a hidden condition or requested change affects the agreed scope, it should be discussed before the extra work proceeds. The goal is to keep changes clear instead of surprising you at the end of the project.

Before the paint

Preparation, repairs and protecting your home

Paint can only perform as well as the surface beneath it. Preparation should be matched to the substrate, existing coating, damage and finish you expect.

What preparation is included before painting?

Preparation depends on the surface and is defined in the estimate. It can include cleaning, sanding, scraping, caulking, filling, spot priming, repairs, masking and other work needed to create a sound surface for the specified coating system.

Are drywall, stucco or wood repairs automatically included?

Repairs are assessed before pricing and the agreed work should be written into the scope. Small painting-related repairs can often be included; larger damage, active moisture, structural movement or specialty repairs may need to be addressed separately first.

How do you protect floors, furniture and adjacent finishes?

Protection is planned around the project. Floors, fixtures and adjacent surfaces are covered or masked as needed, work areas are organized to reduce unnecessary traffic, and the protection plan is adjusted for spraying, sanding and other higher-exposure work.

Do I need to move all of my furniture?

Not always. We discuss furniture, artwork, fragile items, access and room sequencing before the project begins. Homeowners may be asked to remove smaller or valuable items while larger furniture can often be repositioned and protected as the scope allows.

How do you control sanding dust?

Where appropriate, we use Festool sanding equipment with HEPA dust extraction together with masking, containment and cleanup practices. No sanding process is literally dust-free, but proper extraction and protection can dramatically reduce airborne and settled dust.

Can we stay in the house during interior painting?

Many interior projects can be completed in occupied homes. Whether that makes sense depends on the rooms involved, ventilation, drying time, access, pets and your household routine. We discuss sequencing before work begins so you know what areas will be available.

What should I do with pets during the project?

Pets should be kept safely away from active work areas, wet coatings, open doors and equipment. If a pet is anxious, likely to escape or sensitive to disruption, arranging a separate secure area is usually the safest option.

What happens at the end of the job?

The work is reviewed against the agreed scope, protection is removed, the work area is cleaned and a final walkthrough is completed so any legitimate finishing details can be identified before the project is closed out.

Coating decisions

Paint products, colour, sheen, primer and coats

There is no single “best paint” for every surface. Product, primer, sheen and application method should fit the substrate, exposure, durability requirement and finish you want.

What paint products do you use?

Product selection depends on the project. Systems we commonly specify can include Benjamin Moore Aura, Regal and Scuff-X, Dulux Diamond Exterior Matt, and SICO ProLuxe wood finishes. The written scope should identify the coating family selected for your surfaces.

Can someone help us choose paint colours?

Yes. Booked painting clients can receive professional designer colour guidance to help coordinate undertones, lighting, existing finishes and the overall look of the home.

How do you choose the right paint sheen?

Sheen is selected around the surface, lighting, condition and cleaning requirements. Higher sheens can improve washability but also reveal more texture and imperfections, so the most durable choice is not automatically the glossiest one.

How many coats of paint will my project need?

It depends on the existing colour, new colour, substrate, repairs, product and coverage. Dramatic colour changes or difficult substrates may require additional work. The estimate should describe the planned coating system rather than rely on a blanket rule.

Does every wall need primer before painting?

No. Primer is used when the surface or coating system calls for it—for example on repairs, bare material, certain stains, adhesion-sensitive surfaces or where the manufacturer requires a primer. Sound previously painted walls do not automatically need full priming.

Can you match an existing paint colour?

Often, yes. A known colour formula is best, but a suitable sample can also be matched. Age, UV exposure, previous application and sheen changes can make a fresh coating look different from an older surrounding surface even when the formula is correct.

Will a small touch-up disappear completely?

Not always. Touch-ups can flash because of sheen, texture, application method, age or fading. When an invisible repair matters, repainting the full wall or logical surface can be more reliable than touching up one small area.

Can I request a particular paint brand or product?

Absolutely—we can discuss it. The final recommendation still has to make sense for the substrate, existing coating and performance required. If a requested product is not a good fit, we will explain why and recommend a compatible alternative.

Inside the home

Interior painting, ceilings, trim and doors

Interior work is more than wall colour. Ceilings, trim, doors, existing coatings, repairs, dust control and application method all affect the finished result.

Can you paint walls, ceilings, baseboards, trim and doors?

Yes. Interior projects can include walls, ceilings, baseboards, window and door trim, interior doors and other paintable surfaces when they are specifically included in the written scope.

Can you paint over old oil-based paint?

It may be possible, but the existing coating needs to be assessed first. Cleaning, deglossing or sanding and a suitable bonding primer may be required before applying a compatible finish coat. Adhesion matters more than simply choosing a new colour.

What happens with older textured or popcorn ceilings?

Older textured ceilings may require asbestos testing before the surface is disturbed. We review the condition and planned preparation first and will not treat unknown older texture as ordinary drywall when testing may be appropriate.

Can you repair drywall before painting?

Common painting-related dents, holes and minor damage can often be included in the scope. Larger failures, repeated cracking, water damage or movement should be diagnosed before cosmetic work so the underlying problem is not simply covered.

How soon can I use a freshly painted room?

Dry-to-touch and fully cured are not the same thing. Light use may be possible relatively soon, while washing, heavy contact or replacing items against a newly coated surface can require more time. We follow the coating manufacturer’s drying and curing guidance.

Do darker or dramatic colour changes affect the job?

They can. Moving between very light and very dark colours may affect primer choice, coat requirements and the way imperfections read under different lighting. That is one reason the colour plan should be known before the final scope is set.

Do you spray trim and doors or brush and roll them?

The application method is chosen for the surface, access, existing finish and result required. Spraying can provide an excellent finish when the masking and setup make sense; brush-and-roll methods can be the better choice in occupied or detail-heavy areas.

Calgary conditions

Exterior painting, weather and application

Calgary exterior work has to respect the surface and the weather. Temperature, wind, moisture, direct sun and cure time matter more than the month printed on the calendar.

When is the best time for exterior painting in Calgary?

The right time is when surface temperature, moisture, wind, forecast and product requirements are suitable for application and curing. A warm date on the calendar is not enough if the substrate is wet, the surface is too hot or the forecast creates a curing problem.

What happens if the weather changes during my exterior project?

Exterior work is adjusted around safe and manufacturer-compliant application conditions. If rain, temperature, wind or surface moisture creates a problem, it is better to pause the affected work than force a coating onto a surface that is not ready.

Do you wash exterior surfaces before painting?

Cleaning depends on the substrate and its condition. Dust, chalk, loose contamination and suitable biological growth should be addressed with a method that protects the material, followed by adequate drying before coating.

Can you paint over peeling or chalky exterior paint?

Loose or poorly bonded material must be addressed first. Painting directly over peeling or chalking transfers the failure to the new coating and shortens its life.

Do you spray or brush and roll exterior paint?

The tool follows the surface and conditions. Professional spraying can be efficient and produce an excellent finish when masking and wind control are appropriate; brush-and-roll methods remain the better choice for some details, substrates and weather conditions.

Can you paint exterior doors and garage doors?

Yes, when they are included in the written scope and the existing surface is suitable for recoating. Preparation and application method depend on the door material, existing finish, exposure and finish expectations.

How long should exterior paint last in Calgary?

There is no responsible single number for every house. Longevity depends on substrate condition, preparation, coating system, sun and weather exposure, moisture, building details and maintenance. Highly exposed and sheltered elevations will not age at the same rate.

What makes exterior paint last longer?

A sound substrate, compatible coating system, thorough preparation and application in suitable conditions matter more than simply buying an expensive can of paint. Moisture problems and failed previous coatings should be addressed before the new finish is expected to perform.

Specialty exteriors

Stucco, masonry, decks and exterior wood

Stucco and exterior wood need different decisions from ordinary painted siding. Existing coatings, moisture movement, cracks and the type of stain already on the wood all matter.

Can you paint stucco?

Yes. We assess cracking, prior coatings, repairs and moisture concerns before selecting an appropriate coating approach. The goal is a compatible system and sound preparation—not simply covering every crack with a heavy coating.

How do you approach cracks in stucco?

Cracks are evaluated by size, location and condition. Some can be prepared and repaired as part of the painting scope, while movement, significant damage or moisture-related failures may need a more specialized repair before coating.

Does Dynamic Painting use elastomeric paint on stucco?

No. Dynamic Painting does not use elastomeric paint as a blanket solution for residential stucco. We favour compatible, breathable masonry coating systems and repair-first planning.

Do you seal stucco before painting?

We do not recommend indiscriminately sealing stucco. The wall must be able to manage vapour and moisture, and the coating system needs to remain compatible with the existing assembly.

How do you refinish decks and exterior wood?

We first identify the existing coating, wood condition and compatibility requirements. Preparation may involve cleaning, sanding or removal of failed material before a compatible stain or finish system is applied. SICO ProLuxe products are among the systems we use where appropriate.

Can every old deck be changed from a solid stain to a transparent finish?

Not realistically without removing the existing opaque coating back to suitable bare wood. A transparent or semi-transparent system needs the wood itself to be visible and able to accept that finish, so the existing coating determines what preparation is required.

Can weathered exterior wood simply be stained over?

Not always. Weathered fibres, failed coatings, contamination and uneven absorption can all affect the result. The wood should be assessed first so cleaning, sanding or removal work matches the finish system being applied.

Why do deck and wood-finishing quotes vary so much?

The biggest difference is often preparation. Cleaning an existing compatible finish is very different from sanding failed material back to sound wood. Railings, steps, board condition, access and the selected finish system also change the labour significantly.

Trust and follow-through

Insurance, warranty, credentials and service areas

Credentials do not replace workmanship, but they are part of hiring responsibly. Ask for clear documentation, understand who is accountable and read the warranty before the project begins.

Are you insured and covered by WCB?

Yes. Dynamic Painting carries $5 million in liability coverage and maintains WCB coverage for professional project work. Current documentation can be requested.

Is Dynamic Painting BBB Accredited?

Yes. Dynamic Painting is BBB Accredited and A+ rated. Credentials are one part of the hiring decision; the written scope, preparation plan and accountability on the project matter just as much.

Do you offer a painting warranty?

Yes. Eligible projects include a two-year warranty, subject to the written terms, conditions and exclusions on our warranty page. The warranty should be read together with the project scope so you know what is covered.

What should I do if I notice an issue after the project?

Contact Dynamic Painting and identify the area of concern. We can review it against the completed scope, site conditions and applicable warranty terms and determine the appropriate next step.

Where does Dynamic Painting work?

We serve Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane and selected surrounding communities and acreage properties, depending on project scope and scheduling.

How long has Dynamic Painting been operating?

Dynamic Painting Inc. has operated since 2012. The company is founder-led, and Marc Sharkey remains directly involved in estimating, project communication and quality expectations.

How do I know I am comparing painters fairly?

Compare the written scope line by line: preparation, surfaces, repairs, product system, protection, exclusions, accountability, insurance and warranty. A lower price is not automatically better value if it removes work that the surface actually needs.

How do I get started?

Book an estimate online or call us. We will discuss the property, surfaces, priorities and timing, then determine the right next step for an accurate written scope.
