Benjamin Moore Aura and Ultra Spec 500 should be compared by the exact product, sheen and requirements of the job. A broad solids-content range for an entire product family cannot establish which paint will cover better, need fewer coats or last longer on your walls.
Aura is marketed as a premium interior line. Ultra Spec 500 is marketed for professional, high-volume work. Those positions help explain the ranges, but they are not a controlled performance test of your chosen products.
What volume solids tells you
Volume solids describes the proportion of wet coating expected to remain as dry film. At the same wet application thickness, a higher volume-solids percentage can leave more dry film. That number alone does not establish hiding power, scrub resistance, adhesion or service life.
Weight solids and volume solids measure different things and should not be used interchangeably. Resin, pigments, colour, application thickness, substrate and the product’s design all matter when assessing a coating.
Use product-specific specifications
As checked on October 3, 2026, these Canadian Benjamin Moore listings illustrate why a single range for every sheen is misleading:
| Specific listing | Published volume solids | What the figure does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Aura Interior Satin F526, Whisper CSP-500 listing | 39% ± 2% | The specification for every Aura sheen, base or later formula. |
| Ultra Spec 500 Interior Eggshell F538 listing | 42% ± 2% | Better or worse finished performance than a different product or sheen. |
These are different sheens, so this is not a like-for-like performance ranking. Before ordering, match the can, product code, sheen and base to the current technical data sheet. Ask the supplier to resolve any difference between a web listing and that sheet.
Compare the properties the room needs
- Appearance: compare samples in the room’s lighting, including reflection and roller texture.
- Cleaning: check the product’s documented washability and curing instructions.
- Coverage: account for the existing colour, repairs, primer and specified spread rate.
- Application: check tools, conditions and recoat times for the exact coating.
- Maintenance: keep the product record and consider how future repairs or touch-ups will be handled.
Do not assume that Ultra Spec is unsuitable for a home or that Aura automatically eliminates a coat. Either recommendation needs to fit the surface, expectations and written scope.
Compare the finished scope, not just the can price
For the same room, ask what each option includes: preparation, primer if needed, finish coats and application method. If a contractor expects a different coat count, ask why and how complete coverage will be confirmed. A hypothetical saving from one fewer coat is not a guaranteed saving on your project.
When could either option make sense?
Consider Aura when its documented finish properties and appearance justify the price for your scope. Consider Ultra Spec 500 when the selected product meets the required finish and maintenance expectations at a suitable project cost. Check the actual requirements rather than dividing every job into “homeowner paint” and “rental paint.”
What to ask at your estimate
Ask for the exact product and sheen, why they suit the room, the preparation required and the planned coat count. If finish appearance is especially important, agree on a sample area before applying the coating throughout the room.
Avoid these comparison mistakes
- Using one solids figure for an entire product family.
- Comparing different sheens as if every other variable were identical.
- Promising fewer coats without considering colour and substrate.
- Assuming price alone proves durability.
Aura and Ultra Spec questions
Does higher solids always mean better paint?
No. It describes one coating property. Use product-specific performance information and the intended application to compare suitability.
Will Aura always need fewer coats?
No. Colour changes, repairs, application and the coating instructions determine the scope. See our interior coat-count guide.
Is Ultra Spec only for commercial buildings?
No. Assess the specific product and the requirements of the room instead of ruling it in or out by building type alone.
Choose a documented coating system
Dynamic Painting’s interior painting service explains how preparation and coating choices fit into the estimate. Confirm the full system before selecting on price or a single specification.
